The Clue? Look at the buttons on these! Each tiny button had to be done up every time these gaiters were worn. Gaiters are extra foot ware that go around the bottom part of your leg. On this picture you can see the strap that held these ones in place under the foot as well.

    Victorian gentlemen did! Some dining rooms (like ours) had a special cupboard to house a chamber pot so all the gentlemen could go for a wee without leaving the table (once the ladies had left the room, of course!).
