Coffee Grinder. Coffee is easy to make today, when you buy packets or jars from the shop and add water, but Victorians bought their coffee as beans and had to turn them into powder to add to hot water. You can see coffee beans today in some shops, if you have felt one you will know how hard they are! This grinder has to crush the hard beans down into a powder. The beans are poured into the top and then you turn the handle to crush them inside. The powder falls down into the drawer at the bottom.

Strange But True

  • list arrowHow did Victorians try out a new invention?

Test it on the servants of course! That's what happened in 1860 at The Judge's Lodging, when gas lighting was put into the basement and not the Judge's rooms. They wanted to see if they got sick from the fumes. The servants were fine - that's why we got the lights working again.
